Essential Tools for the Modern Indie Studio

In the fast-paced world of game development, having the right stack is essential. Here are some tools we rely on at Greathouse Games.

Version Control: Git & GitHub

This is non-negotiable. Even if you're working alone, version control saves you from catastrophic mistakes. We use GitHub for hosting our repositories and managing issues.

Project Management: Trello / Notion

Keeping track of tasks is vital. Trello is great for a simple Kanban board, while Notion offers a more robust database for design documents and wikis.

Communication: Discord

For real-time communication, Discord is king. It's also a great place to build a community around your game once you're ready to show it off.

Game Engines: Unity vs. Godot vs. Unreal

  • Unity: Great for 2D and mobile, with a massive asset store.
  • Unreal: The beast for high-fidelity 3D graphics.
  • Godot: The rising open-source star, lightweight and completely free.

Choose the tool that fits your project, not just what's popular.
